Why Should We Study Shakespeare?

Why Should We Study Shakespeare?

Although President’s Day shortened our class days to two rather than three, this week was still full of new topics. This week was our intro to Shakespeare; on Monday, we completed an assignment about Shakespeare’s past as well as how he gained success through his works. We also analyzed the style of his writings and his word choice. This information is important to learn because it shows us the development of language through history. Shakespeare created many different phrases and words that are still used today, as well as composed many genres and styles of writing that we are able to see in present works.

Because our unit is over all things Shakespeare, this week reminded me of the movie She’s The Man which is based on the Shakespeare play The Twelfth Night. In the movie, Viola uses rhetoric to persuade her brother Sebastian to let her dress up as him in order to play soccer on the boy’s school team. Viola is successful in persuading Sebastian, and she ends up winning the rivalry game against Cornwall.

This week I experienced rhetoric in my life when I persuaded my family to eat at Olive Garden. We were trying to decide where to eat on Friday night, and through the use of my persuasive techniques, I was able to convince them to choose to eat at Olive Garden.
